The Roy Huntingford Organ

THE ORGAN RESTORATION IS NOW COMPLETE

The organ was played for the first time after restoration on December 24th 2006 at the Low Row Village Carol Service. It was just as well that the job was completed by then as many of the parts of the organ, not taken back to Morpeth for further work, had been stored in the gallery of the church. The congregation for the carol service numbered over 100 and most of the seats in the gallery were needed!

builder's plaque

1. The organ is a single manual instrument with pedal board and coupler. The builder, Roy Huntingford, was the head of a small firm based in Walthamstow, London. He personally built and installed the organ in Low Row. It was the third organ he made.

2. This organ, built in 1924, is thought to be one of the few examples, and possibly the only one, of an original Huntingford organ remaining in regular use for over 80 years in an unaltered state.

3. The size and power of the instrument is ideally suited to the church building for which it was designed. It is well built and has an excellent tone.

4. The acoustic of the church is well suited to performances of choral works with organ accompaniment.

5. The remote location of the organ in Upper Swaledale, and its continued and widening use in the musical life of the dale, makes it an important asset to the community and to the many visitors to this most beautiful part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

6. An Historic Organ Certificate was recently awarded by the British Institute of Organ Studies.
(See The National Pipe Organ Register.)

7. A grant of £10,000 has been awarded by the Council for the Care of Churches towards the restoration.

8. The Dales Fund of the United Reformed Church contributed £5,000 towards the restoration.

9. A contract worth £19,740.00 inclusive of VAT has been signed with John Lightbown & Sons, Organ Builders of Morpeth, Northumberland, for the restoration of the organ. The work started on time on 16th October and was virtually complete by December 24th 2006.

10. The remaining almost £5,000 was raised through private donations, topped up with a small contribution from the general funds of the church. We are grateful for the support of all who helped with this project.
