Low Row Art Group was formed a good few years ago in response to local interest. We were fortunate to be offered facilities within Low Row URC. and remain grateful for the continued support. David Ickringill, who organised the group from the beginning and since then has contributed his enthusiasm for and expertise in watercolour painting, is attached to the church. The group continues to meet regularly for two hours on Wednesday afternoons. Although none of the original members still attend, we are pleased to say, that having acquired some skills, they continue to paint independently, There are currently ten active members, significantly five men, five women. Numbers are limited by the actual space available in the church. Most members are local that is from an area stretching between Reeth and Muker. One enthusiast however travels each week, come rain or shine, from Darlington a round trip of about sixty miles. He has come to love the dale, his commitment serves as a reminder to those of us who each day are surrounded by the beautiful landscapes we attempt to paint, just how privileged we are. Not all members are of retirement age, yet our oldest member is 82. Some members are connected to other local churches, two serving as church wardens one in Melbecks the other in Muker, whilst others are connected to none. If we were to look at what success has been gained in producing a finished painting we can say that members have exhibited within the church and successfully in local shows at Muker and Reeth there gaining the top prizes. The emphasis of the group however still centres round the process rather than the product, it provides a channel for friendship and fellowship, for relaxation and renewal, a midweek space in which to share our interests. If you are interested in coming in to have a look at us the kettle is usually on at about 3 o' clock.David Ickringill |
